Cholesterol Supplements
Research has shown that use of supplements and vitamins is essential in our diets because the processed foods we eat today do not provide enough nutrients for our bodies.
The supplements listed here can help you in your regiment of maintaining proper cholesterol levels.
Coenzyme Q 10 (CoQ10):
CoQ10 is an energy nutrient produced by the body and is extremely important for the organs; especially the ones that use the most energy and function continuously such as the heart. The heart has the highest concentration of CoQ10. Other organs that use a tremendous amount of CoQ10 include the brain, kidneys, and liver.
It has been reported that the cholesterol lowering drugs, also known as statins, have toxic side effects including muscle pain and weakness, nerve damage, central nervous system damage, and that these drugs inhibit the body's ability to produce CoQ10. Therefore, use of CoQ10 is recommended to provide your body with this nutrient. CoQ10 is available in both capsules and gel caplets.
Curcumin/Turmeric Spice:
Curcumin, or as it is commonly called turmeric, is an ancient spice in the ginger family. Research has shown that adding turmeric to your diet has a positive impact on cholesterol reduction. One study showed a 29% increase in beneficial HDL and total cholesterol fell 33% after a 7 day trial of volunteers taking turmeric.
Green Tea:
Green tea has been shown to lower "bad" LDL triglycerides and inhibits formation of cholesterol in the arteries. You can even get green tea in supplement form. One to ten cups of green tea a day is recommended or one 350mg capsule of green tea supplement may be more to your liking.
Vitamin E:
Vitamin E has been reported to provide protection against approximately 80 diseases. A Tufts University study found vitamin E may inhibit the production of "bad" LDL cholesterol. In addition, an extensive study by the National Institute of Aging found seniors who took vitamin E supplements were less likely to die prematurely and had a 27% lower risk of heart disease.
Benefits of Soy:
According to a September 1998 Journal of Nutrition study diets rich in soy protein can help protect against the development of atherosclerosis or the hardening of the arteries from plaque buildup. Swanson Health Products features a 750mg supplement of soy germ complex.
Artichoke Leaf Extract:
Another supplement that has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels is artichoke leaf extract. A 1996 study of 553 participants demonstrated a significant decline in both cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. Artichoke leaf extracts are available in capsule form. Available from Swanson Health Products.
Cholesterol Buster:
Jerky Direct produces high quality, natural, low sodium, and low fat jerky products and in addition they offer a line of supplements which includes a supplement called Cholesterol Buster. This supplement works in the liver without inhibiting production of CoQ10 which is why there have been no reported side effects of clinical trials with this product.
Jay Hebdon of Jerky Direct points out the use of Cholesterol Buster in clinical trials showed:
- affordable, safe, natural cholesterol reduction by 30%
- reduction of "bad" LDL cholesterol by 27%
- 34% reduction in triglycerides
- increase of "good" HDL triglycerol by 4%
- improved LDL-HDL ratio by 30%.
