Brain Supplements

Processed foods in our diets today are causing deficiencies of proper nutrients that our bodies need.  Poor diets contribute to this problem.  It has been documented by studies of longevity that supplementation is very important to help replace these lost nutrients.  Some of the supplements related to brain health are listed here.

Cognizin Citicoline:

  • Supports cognitive function
  • Facilitates brain cell communication
  • Assists in sustaining mitochondria in the brain, the energy factories inside the brain cell
  • Supports memory and verbal learning abilities

Ultra Phosphatidylserine:
Phosphatidylserine (PS) is concentrated in brain tissue, which is why researchers are focused on its benefits for mental nourishment. PS also aids cell membrane structure and function.

Cinnamon:
Cinnamon may have a positive effect in combating diabetes according to Richard Anderson of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Recent studies have shown that insulin resistance may also be involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. A recent study involving 30 people with type 2 diabetes had a significant decrease in blood glucose, triglycerides, LDL, and cholesterol after only 40 days of taking cinnamon.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10):
CoQ10 is an energy nutrient produced by the body and is extremely important for our organs, especially the brain, heart, kidneys, and liver which function continuously and use an extreme amount of this substance. Unfortunately most of us are deficient in CoQ10 due to processed foods, the way our food is grown with chemicals, and some medications. One study reported in Clinical Cardiology showed 62% of heart failure patients had deficient levels of this nutrient which is also linked to senility, high blood pressure, gum disease, and cancer.

CoQ10 is famous for its heart protection properties, but works wonders for your brain as well. Brain levels of CoQ10 start to decline in your 20s and is found to be lowest in stroke victims and those suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. There is growing evidence that this nutrient protects your nerves and may stave off the very difficult problem of memory loss with age.

Supplementing with CoQ10 can raise your blood levels of this critical enzyme.

Flax Seed:
Flax is a good source of omega-3 essential fatty acid alpha linolenic acid (ALA) which is known for its support for the brain, heart, skin, hair, nails, and joints. It is also the best source of lignans (plant based estrogens) which are important for maintaining healthy bones, heart function, and hormonal balance.

Flax can be added to the diet in a variety of ways such as a whole seed, ground seed, milled flax seed, bottled oil, and soft gel supplements. If you use flax seed, the seed should be broken open or crushed first or it will not be digested.

TIP:  Mix flax meal (which is crushed) with canned Alaskan wild salmon and eggs and bake till done—delicious and a power food!
